Die Kirchengeschichte wird an den Hochschulen nicht nur von Kirchenhistorikern und Kirchenhistorikerinnen behandelt. Auch die Systematiker und Systematikerinnen berücksichtigen sie in ihren Vorlesungen und Veröffentlichungen. Insofern lernen die Theologie Studierenden von beiden die Kirchengeschichte kennen. Welche Perspektiven dabei die systematischen Theologen und Theologinnen im 20. Jahrhundert (von Moltmann bis Axmacher) vermittelten, hat Bernd Jaspert in diesem Buch untersucht. Er kam dabei zu dem Ergebnis, dass dies - abgesehen von einigen Ausnahmen - im Wesentlichen sachgerecht geschah, dass guy dabei aber von Karl Barths Verdikt der Kirchengeschichte als einer Hilfswissenschaft der übrigen Theologie in den verschiedenen theologischen Richtungen abgerückt ist.
